Individual Therapy

What exactly happens in a therapy session?

Great question! The first therapy session, or intake, is used to get to know each other.  I am often asking questions to understand what is bringing someone in to see me as well as getting a lot of background information.  Because of this, clients can leave feeling drained! Intakes, are also a time for clients to see if the therapist is a good fit for them.  But after the initial session, the client definitely drives the direction of the sessions depending on what would be most useful for us to use to the space to work on.  I understand that therapy is sometimes the only space that my clients have where they feel safe enough to explore certain topics without judgement.  Therefore, I want to allow them the ability to use each session how they need to.

While eating disorders and LGBTQ+ issues are my speciality areas, I actually work with clients on a variety of issues. Here’s a brief list of other reasons people come to see me:

Depression    Anxiety    Relationship Difficulties    Life Transitions  Sleep Issues   Multicultural Issues   Trauma    School Stress    Work Stress   Women’s Issues   Self Harm

Using an Attachment & Family Systems Approach

Families, no matter what they look like, often shape who we are and thus leave a lasting impact on us.  Sometimes the impact is really obvious.  Sometimes it is not.  Clients walk in my door for a variety of reasons and I have found that unpacking the family system and it’s impact is extremely helpful in understanding what is going on today.  This means sometimes going all the way back to attachment, which occurs between a baby and a caregiver.  Other times it means unpacking current relationships and exploring how attachment may be manifesting today.

While there is no changing the past, we can understand, have compassion for, and heal parts of us that can be stuck in the past.  Without healing, those parts can be replaying old patterns whether you are aware of it or not.
