As a LGBTQ+ Therapist, I want all to know:
This is a SAFE ZONE where ALL are welcome.

Whether you are trying to find support for a loved one or yourself, this is the place for you. I understand that finding an LGBTQ+ therapist can be one of the most infuriating tasks. But it is possible! We/I do exist.
I also understand that some of my clients have unfortunately been to therapists and other providers who say this is an LGBTQ+ affirmative space but end up doing more harm.
Then what is LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy?
Well, it does start with safety and non-judgment. But it goes beyond that. It includes advocacy and bringing in social justice to the therapy space. It means believing in and not questioning the lived experience of someone. It means that as a therapist I am aware that I have homophobic and transphobic parts as a result of growing up in this society. This is a life long unlearning. It means not reinforcing heteronormative, cisgendered norms in my office, but listening to my clients if I unconsciously do.
This is LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy.

This is a place for comfort and growth.
These are just examples of what some of my LGBTQ+ clients come to me for:
– Coming out
– Support for their gender affirming journey
– General identity exploration
– Exploring the intersection of their religion and their gender/sexuality
– Depression, anxiety, trauma, and eating disorders
– Dating/Marriage struggles
– Starting a family or parenting
– Discrimination
– Divorce or other big life transitions

This is a place for EDUCATION and ADVOCACY.
Understanding basic terms is one starting place.
Sex Assigned at Birth
Classification based on anatomy, hormones, and chromosomes.
Gender
The way you internally align/experience gender given the options as you see it.
Gender Expression
The way you externally present your gender through dress, demeanor, and actions.
Sexual Orientation
This is who you are physically and romantically attracted to, which are not always aligned.
I have worked with clients, families, schools, and businesses to help them understand the LGBTQ+ community. I find that for even some of my clients who are questioning, working through these terms is just as helpful as it is for allies. The Trans Student Educational Resources is a website that provides additional resources. They also have a great infographic called the Gender Unicorn that goes in more detail about the terms above.
